3.111 In the power loom sector there are 21 working co-operative societies. Out of the 694 powerlooms Industry and Labour
in the State during 2013-14, 83% are in the co-operative sector and the rest in the private sector.
Comparing the figures for 2012-13 and 2013-14 it is noted that the production of cloth in quantity and
the value of production increased in the case of co-op sector, and decreased in the case of the rest.
Details are given in Appendix 3.43
Khadi and Village Industries
3.112 Khadi is the proud legacy of our national freedom movement and the father of the nation.
Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) are two national heritages of India playing a significant role in
generating employment in rural areas at a very low per capita investment. These industries use
eco friendly local resources and generate sustainable employment opportunities in rural areas.
In India, Khadi and Village Industries sector has registered a positive growth in production, sales
and employment generation during 2013-14 over the performance of previous year. In Kerala,
the responsibility of organising, developing and promoting Khadi and Village Industries is vested
with Khadi and Village Industries Board , a statutory body under State Government. Co-operative
societies, registered institutions and departmental units carry out the activities of the Board with the
financial assistance of State Government, Khadi and Village Industries Commission and Nationalized
Banks. The Board has achieved 100 per cent and 97.23 per cent financial targets during 2012-13
and 2013-14 respectively. The diagrammatic representation of estimated production and sale of
Khadi and Village Industries products at national level and State level (by departmental and aided
institutions) for the past four years is given below.

3.113 The bar diagrams above lead us to infer that both the estimated production and sale of of
Khadi and Village Industries products at national level is exhibiting an almost linear upward trend
indicating steady growth. But Kerala trend shows that the estimated production and sales is more
or less stagnant with slight fluctuation during the period from 2010-11 to 2013-14. However the
estimated value of sales during 2013-14 was comparatively above than that of 2012-13 which may
be due to factors such as decrease in value of money ,hike in prices of products and incentives
through Govt. Schemes.
