4.11 Malappuram District has the largest number of schools (1494nos) in the state followed by Kannur
(1289nos) and Kozhikode (1237nos). Malappuram district has the largest number of government
(546 nos) and unaided schools also (167nos) in the state. But largest number of aided schools are
functioning in Kannur district (959nos). Details of district-wise, management wise and stage-wise
number of schools in Kerala during 2013-14 are given in Appendix 4.4.
4.12 1161 schools in the state are offering syllabus other than the one prescribed by the state
government. These include 978 CBSE schools, 139 ICSE schools, 30 Kendriya Vidhyalayas and
14 Jawahar Navodayas. One Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya school each is functioning in all the
districts. District-wise details of schools with syllabus other than state syllabus in the year 2013-14
are given in Appendix 4.5.

New Initiatives in Education
Under the Government of India E- Governance Plan (NeGP), the mission mode project of
e Governance in School Education (MMP), Ministry of Human Resource Development has
decided to implement the parents related services in phase -1 “Shaala Darpan” of the MMP in
ICT enabled Government schools and Government aided schools on a pilot mode on the state
of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
The department of school education and literacy has launched a National Repository of Open
Education Resources (NROER). This is a collaborative platform that endeavours to bring
together relevant and appropriate digital digitizable resources in multiple languages for the
school system for all classes and subjects.
Government of India has also taken a decision to provide access to a National Electronic
Library (NEL) to its citizens including students and teachers in schools, colleges and universi-
ties. Most resources in NEL would be available in open access to every citizen of India without
any restrictions.

Physical Infrastructure and Facilities in Government Schools
4.13 All the Government Schools in Kerala are functioning in pucca buildings. None of the schools
are functioning in thatched sheds. Own buildings have to be constructed for 131 government schools
which are now working in rented buildings. District-wise details of government schools having
building facilities during 2013-14 are given in Appendix 4.6.
4.14 Local Self Government Institutions and programmes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) have
contributed much to the overall development and improvement of physical infrastructure and common
facilities in government schools in the state. Data shows that 97.81% of government schools have
access to drinking water and 99.59% have urinals/latrine facilities. District–wise details of government
schools having drinking water/latrines/urinal facilities in Kerala in 2013-14 are given in Appendix
4.7.
Enrolment of Students
4.15 Enrolment of students in the state has been showing a decline in the recent years. Enrolment
of students in 2014-15 was 38.01 lakh and has decreased by 1.32% over the previous year. Change
