4.56 Total number of teachers working in polytechnics of the state is 1624. Women teachers SOCIAL SERVICE
constitute 29.62% of the total teachers in polytechnics. Details of number of students and teachers
in polytechnics are given in Appendix 4.48. Number of SC/ST students and SC/ST teachers in
polytechnics in the report year are given in Appendix 4.49.
4.57 Thirty nine Government technical high schools are functioning in the state. Total number of
students in technical high schools in the year 2014-15 was 8709, and 855 teachers were working
in technical high schools of the state in the corresponding period. Women teachers constitute
23.04% of teachers in technical high schools. Number of students and teachers in technical high
schools in 2012-13 to 2014-15 are given in Appendix 4.50. SC students and ST students in technical
high schools accounted for 12.76% and 0.96% of total students respectively. Details are given in
Appendix 4.51 and 4.52.
4.58 The increased demand for higher education driven by the private sector opportunities in the
emerging world is not currently being met. For augmenting the present facilities the state is thinking
of starting various industry based courses on PPP mode, Govt. Autonomous Colleges, Deemed
Universities and Off- Campus Centers of well known foreign and outside state Universities. This
will not only provide the chance of availing advanced education at cheaper cost but also inculcate
a healthy competition among Universities/institutions within the state. The State is also striving for
expanding and diversifying education to the most modern areas so as to utilise the emerging avenues
of employment and development.

Art and Culture
4.59 Kerala’s culture is distinct and unique with an enviable tradition of numerous art forms.Cultural
Affairs Department is entrusted with the mission of preserving, promoting and disseminating all such
forms of art and culture.There are many institutions set apart for the promotion and encouragement
of these art forms.Academies, publishing houses, cultural centres, institutions of fine arts and folk
arts, research centres and directorates like Museums and Zoos, Archives, Archaeology etc are some
of these institutions.A brief summary of major activities carried out by the cultural institutions during
the report year are the following.
• By utilizing plan funds,Kerala State Film Development Corporation renovated theatres
at Thrissur and Cherthala with latest technologies like 2K projection, modern push back
seats,7.1 surround sound system ,good toilet facilities etc. After renovation income has
more than doubled .
• Archaeology Department had implemented Museum Guide Service Project through
Keralam Museum, published the book “Museums of Kerala” and brochures for all museums.
Renovation, conservation and modernization of palaces and temples are done by the
department. Department had also done graphic documentation of Padmanabhapuram
palace as part of including it in the world heritage list.
• Under the Scheme ‘digitalisation of palm leaf records’Kerala State Archives department had
completed the digitalization of Mathilakom records (relating to Sree Padmanabha Swami
temple) and 2,30,000 records has been digitalized so far. Department has also completed
the works of transliteration of 26796 palm leaf records into Malayalam.
• Implementation of security surveillance system in the Museum Campus, modernisation
of reptile house and setting up of enclosures for Anacondas and King Cobras with relief
features etc are some of the achievements pertaining to Modernization of Museums and
Zoos
