                Major Health Problems in Kerala

                Communicable Diseases

4.69 Kerala is witnessing an increasing burden of diseases, both communicable and non
communicable. Although the state has been successful in controlling communicable diseases such
as Dengue, Aids, Malaria, Leptospyrosis, Hepatitis, Chikungunya, H5N1, in recent years there is a
resurgence of these diseases leading to considerable morbidity and mortality.

                Bird Flu

4.70 The bird flu, highly infectious H5N1 virus strain has affected largely the southern districts of
Kerala viz Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Alappuzha. There have been no reports of the virus
affecting humans. Avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, is an infectious viral disease of birds.
Influenza viruses circulating in animals pose threats to human health. Humans can become ill when
infected with viruses from animal sources. Controlling the disease in animals is the first step in
decreasing risks to humans. According to the World Health Organisation, while millions of fowls have
died due to the Avian Influenza, only 393 human deaths (zero in India) have been recorded globally
                between 2003-14.
