Kudumbashree – A success story
Launched by the Government of Kerala in 1998 for wiping out absolute poverty from the
State through concerted community action under the leadership of Local Self Governments,
Kudumbashree is today one of the largest women-empowering projects in the country. The
programme has 41 lakh members and covers more than 50% of the households in Kerala.
Built around three critical components, - micro credit, entrepreneurship and empowerment,
the Kudumbashree initiative has succeeded to a great extent in addressing the basic needs
of the less privileged women, thus providing them a more dignified life and a better future.
Kudumbashree tries to engage women in civil society in development issues and opportunities,
and helps women and the poor find a collective voice to claim their basic rights.
Female Workforce Participation Rate - An intra state comparison
4.219 As per Census 2011, the FWPR of the state has increased by 2.8 points in the last decade.
Four districts of the state namely: Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Pathanamthitta have FWPR
which is lower than that of the state as a whole. Moreover, the performance of Kozhikode and
Malappuram is too poor. Two districts, namely Wayanad and Idukki have FWPR which is higher
than the all-India rate. Idukki has the highest FWPR in the state as the women in the rural sector of
the agrarian district are more economically active. The district-wise comparison is provided in the
table below.
