colleges are girls. During 2014 KUHAS conducted survey on Social determinants of health in
association with KILA, NRHM and Medical Colleges.
Indian System of Medicine
4.102 Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of some diseases but also a complete
way of life. Indian System of Medicine department renders medical aid to the people through the
network of Ayurveda hospitals and dispensaries, grant-in-aid Ayurveda institutions, Sidha- Vaidya,
Unani, Visha , Netra and Naturopathy. Speciality hospitals such as Mental Hospital, Panchakarma,
Nature cure and Marma are functioning under this department. At present there are 120 hospitals and
793dispensaries under ISM department. The State Medicinal Plants Board also co-ordinate matters
relating to the cultivation, conservation, research and development and promotion of medicinal plants
in the State. List of major institutions and district wise distribution of institutions, beds and patients
under ISM department during 2013 & 2014 is given in Appendix 4.60.
AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy)
4.103 Government of India has set up two regulatory bodies, namely, Central Council of Indian
Medicine (CCIM) under Indian Medicine Central Council (IMCC) Act 1970 for regulation of educational
institutions and practitioners in respect of Ayurveda, Unani and Sidha systems of medicines and
Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH) under Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973 for regulation
of educational institutions and practitioners in respect of Homoeopathy system of medicines. At
present Yoga & Naturopathy, being drugless systems, are not regulated.
National AYUSH Mission
4.104 Department of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy),
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has launched National AYUSH Mission
(NAM). The basic objective of NAM is to promote AYUSH medical systems through cost effective
AYUSH services, strengthening of educational systems, facilitate the enforcement of quality control
of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs and medicinal plants. The funding pattern will
be 75:25 by Centre and State (90:10 for medicinal Plants).
Ayurveda Medicine Manufacturing- OUSHADHI
4.105 OUSHADHI is the largest manufacturer of Ayurvedic medicines all over India in Government
sector functioning especially as a profit making public sector undertaking. Oushadhi is the exclusive
supplier of Ayurvedic medicine to 1016 Government hospitals and dispensaries of ISM department.
In Kerala, Oushadhi supplies Rs.57 crores of medicines each year to State ISM department at 30%
less than market price and ISM department supplies this medicine to the poor patients in the State
free of cost. The company also caters to the demand of the public through a network of 492 exclusive
agencies spread all over the State. Total sales have shown 11.65% increase during 2013-14 when
compared to the sales during the year 2012-13. Similarly profit shows slight increase during the
same period.
Ayurveda Medical Colleges
4.106 There are 3 Government Ayurveda Medical Colleges situated at Thiruvananthapuram,
Thrippunithura and Kannur districts having a bed strength of 1355 and total number of inpatients
treated is 11269 and outpatients 193679. Panchakarma hospital and Women &Children hospital
are also functioning under the Government Ayurveda Medical College Thiruvananthapuram. There
