INFRASTRUCTURE
Introduction
Infrastructure development boosts economic growth and integrates regions, states, nations and
world as a whole. Poor infrastructure results in additional costs in terms of time, effort and money
for accessing essential services viz, Health, Education, Power, Water and so on. The inadequacy of
infrastructure has been considered as a major concern in Kerala, limiting the potential for growth and
employment. The Government has been encouraging the development of all forms of infrastructure.
The recent economic development in the State has put immense pressure on existing infrastructure
viz, Transport, Urban Infrastructure, Energy, ICT and so on. In order to ensure balanced growth in
the infrastructure section, the State has taken various initiatives.
Section 1
Transport Infrastructure
Transport Infrastructure is vital to the economic growth of the State. Considering the economic
transition and status of knowledge economy, there is a need to scientifically plan and develop
transport infrastructure under a long term perspective.
5.2 Out of the five options of transport, viz, road, rail, airports, seaports and inland water ways, roads
hold the majority share in terms of both passenger and freight transport. It has the advantage of
last mile connectivity and state owns an intelligent networks of roads connecting towns and villages.
5.3 But, in order to effectively use the resources, protect environment and economically efficient mode
of moving passengers/ freights, the State has to explore using five options of transport effectively and
create an intermodal transport system.
Road Infrastructure
5.4 Presence of quality infrastructure is vital for social, economic and industrial development of the
country. Roads occupy a prime position because even for using other modes of transport, roads
are needed.
