Major achievements of Thiruvananthapuram Division during 2013-14.
• Improvement in Freight Loading :- +4 % compared to the previous year . Achievement of 3.095
MT against last years loading of 2.975 MT
• Organising freight earning during the year was ` 318.99 Crore, which is 16 % more than the
previous year
• 514 Nos of Special Trains were operated to clear extra rush during Sabarimala season and
other festival seasons
• 1415 Extra Coaches attached to clear extra rush against a total of 1275 during the previous
year
• AC Goods trains in Nagarcoil - Thirunelveli section started with effect from 30.04.2013
• Intermediate block signaling system commissioned between Kollam - Perinad and Kadakkavur
- Murukkumpuzha. The IBS arrangement will improve line capacity to facilitate operation of
more number of trains
• By manned the existing 20 LC gates during the year Kerala has attained the unique status of
unmanned level crossings free State with effect from 07.11.2013
Kochi Metro
5.38 Kochi Metro Rail Project (KMRP) is the flagship project of the Government of Kerala designed
to cure the transportation woes of Kochi City. The Project is implemented through the Kochi Metro
Rail Ltd (KMRL) which is a Special Purpose Vehicle having joint ownership of Government of
Kerala and Government of India with equity participation. The Government gave sanction for the
project in July 2012 at a total cost of ` 5181.79 Crore. The Kochi Metro connecting Aluva-Pettah
will be completed in three stages, and each stage will be approximately 8 Kms and the stations
proposed are 22 numbers.
5.39 The construction works for the first phase , i.e Aluva to Maharajas College ( 18 Kms and 16
stations) is in full swing and targeted to be opened for Revenue Operations by June 2016. Land
acqusition for the first phase is in final stage and 99 percent of the land has already made available
for executing the work. Civil works for the first phase is in progress and about 50 percent of the works
has already been completed. Regarding Rolling Stock, LOA has been issued to M/s Alstom Group
on 26.08.2014 and agreement has been signed on 17.09.2014. First train is expected to be received
by the end of January 2016. The second phase i.e. Maharajas College to Pettah ( about 7.5 Kms
and 6 stations) is in progress.
