Non Communicable Diseases
4.79 Common non–communicable diseases causing great threat to life are cancer, diabetes, cardio
vascular diseases and lung diseases. Unless interventions are made to prevent and control non-
communicable diseases, their burden is likely to increase substantially in future, due to ageing
population and change in life style .Considering the high cost of medicines and longer duration of
treatment, this constitutes a greater financial burden to low income groups.
Cancer
4.80 Cancer is a major disease that affects all sections of human population. Statistics show that
every year, 35000 new cases of cancer are getting detected in Kerala .Nearly 1 lakh people are
under treatment for this disease annually. Apart from Medical Colleges, RCC, and Malabar Cancer
Centre are the hospitals in Government sector which offer treatment for cancer patients. Delay in
early detection, huge treatment cost, minimal treatment centres and lack of awareness contribute to
high mortality of the disease.
