3.59 As per this census, the total number of unregistered MSMEs functioning in the country stands
at 346.12 lakh. In MSME sector the number of registered enterprises in Kerala was 1.50 lakh while
unregistered enterprises was 20.63 lakh and employment in registered sector was 6.21 lakh numbers
while in unregistered sector it was 43.4 lakh.

Investment in MSME Sector

3.60 Total investment made in MSMEs in the country as per the Fourth All India Census of MSMEs
is ` 689954.88 Cr. Kerala is at 5th position with ` 44353.53 Cr, while Gujarat at top with ` 166753.68
Cr. Tamilnadu (at 2nd position) and Karnataka have ` 77824.34 Cr and ` 27161.11 Cr respectively.

Generation of Employment opportunities in MSME Sector

3.61 As per the latest Census (Fourth Census) as well as data extracted from Economic Census
2005 conducted by CSO, MoSPI, the total number of persons employed in the sector increased to
805.24 lakh as compared to 249.33 lakh in the Third All India Census of Small Scale Industries.
3.62 The total number of persons employed by MSMEs, out of 805.24 lakh in entire country, Kerala
was at 6th position with 49.62 lakh people while UP (92.36 lakh) & West Bengal (85.78 lakh) were on
top. Tamilnadu (at 3rd position) and Karnataka had 80.98 lakh and 45.72 lakh respectively.
3.63 As per State –wise Annual Growth Rate Employment in SSI/MSME Sector for 2001-02 to 2006-
07, Arunachal Pradesh is at the top with 107 % and Sikkim at 2nd position, while Kerala is at 6th
position with 35%. Kerala’s Growth Rate is more than that of Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Andhrapradesh,
Gujarat and West Bengal. Annual growth rates of southern states are given in Appendix 3.31
