6.22 Man power from Kerala is well spread across the world. The pattern of emigration has changed
in respect of job seeking. In the early period of 1970s skilled workforce to the total emigrants is
very small. Now skilled workforce from different professions such as doctors, nurse, engineers, IT,
teachers etc. seems to have increased. Profession wise NRKs working in different countries shows
that 11.85 % of NRKs working as drivers, 10.99% as salesman, 6.37 % are nurses, 3.78 % are
engineers, 2.23% are in IT professions and 0.53 % are doctors and the remaining 67.78 % are
working in different areas like businessman, teachers, bank etc.

6.23 Among the doctors, the highest share is reported from Thiruvananthapuram as 14.39 %
followed by Kottayam and Ernakulam as 14.38 and 14.34 % respectively.The lowest share is from
Wayanad district. In the case of nurses, the highest share is from Kottayam as 23.73 % followed
by Pathanamthitta as 20.75 % and then Ernakulam as 18.16 %.For Engineers, Ernakulam has the
highest proportion of 13.47 %,followed by Thrissur 13.23 % and then Kottayam as 10.11 %. Among
the teachers, Pathanamthitta has the highest share of 16.69 % followed by Alappuzha as 15.99 %
and then Kottayam as 9.74 %. Figure 6.5 shows the district wise number of NRKs working in different
jobs abroad.
