Varughese George taught at Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla for about three decades. He holds a Master of Arts in Economics and History, and a doctoral degree for research on the Socialist Movement in Travancore-Cochin, from Kerala University. .
He was a member of Senate of the Kerala University and a member of the Board of Studies of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
Later, he served as Chairman of the Plantation Corporation of Kerala, and as a member of the Farmers Debt Relief Commission, Government of Kerala. He was also an elected member of the first District Council constituted by the Government. He has written eight books including Imperialist Hegemony, Socialist Movement in Kerala, Ram Manohar Lohia (biography), and Faith and Ideology(ed.). He has participated in the Consultation on Nuclear Disarmament in Hiroshima and the Tenth Anniversary Conference of the European Association of Development Institutes in Bonn.
